Robotics is beginning to be applied in restorative dentistry. Recent research has developed robotic systems capable of preparing a tooth for a dental crown based on a previously defined digital plan.
These systems combine intraoral 3D scanning, digital planning, and a robotic arm equipped with a dental handpiece, which performs the tooth preparation following a trajectory calculated by software.
In experimental studies, these robotic systems showed high precision in tooth preparation for crowns, with very small deviations compared with conventional techniques.
Although the technology is still under development, it shows how robotics could partially automate restorative procedures in the future.
