Invisalign Attachments: What Are They and Why Are They Used?

0
Invisalign attachments are small tooth-colored composite resin features bonded to selected teeth during orthodontic treatment. They are designed to modify how the aligners contact the teeth and help transmit forces required for particular orthodontic movements. Align Technology uses the SmartForce system, which includes optimized attachment designs for specific clinical applications. Attachments may be used to assist movements such as certain rotations, extrusions, or root-position corrections. Their shape, position, and number depend on the treatment plan. Not every Invisalign patient requires attachments. Although they can improve mechanical control, attachments do not guarantee that all planned tooth movements will occur exactly as predicted. They are generally removed by the dental professional when no longer needed. Their use illustrates an important characteristic of clear aligner therapy: successful treatment may depend on auxiliary biomechanical features, not only on the transparent aligners themselves.
