Summary in 1 minute
Japanese researchers have launched clinical trials of an experimental drug that stimulates the growth of new teeth by blocking the protein USAG-1, which normally inhibits tooth development.
Preclinical studies demonstrated that neutralizing this protein with specific antibodies can induce new tooth growth in animal models with tooth agenesis. The clinical trial, led by Katsu Takahashi at Kitano Hospital in Osaka, initially evaluates the safety of the treatment in patients with congenital tooth agenesis.
If proven effective, the therapy could represent a genuine biological alternative to dental implants and prosthetic restorations.
