1-MINUTE READ
Dentsply Sirona and Siemens Healthineers developed the MAGNETOM Free.Max Dental Edition, an MRI system specifically designed for dental applications that received FDA clearance in the United States in 2026.
Unlike conventional radiography and CBCT, this technology uses magnetic resonance imaging without ionizing radiation, providing information about soft tissues and certain dentomaxillofacial structures.
The system includes a dedicated dental imaging coil and software adapted for visualizing dental structures.
What makes this technology different?
3 key points
- Soft-tissue imaging: the system can provide information about inflammation, scar tissue and certain anatomical structures that may be difficult to characterize using conventional radiographic imaging.
- Dental applications: manufacturer-reported evaluations highlight potential uses in endodontics, periodontics, temporomandibular joint assessment, extractions and orthodontics.
- No ionizing radiation: it provides an imaging modality that may complement intraoral radiography, panoramic imaging and CBCT.
How could it be useful in clinical practice?
Dental MRI could provide additional diagnostic information when clinicians need to assess soft tissues, inflammatory processes or specific anatomical structures.
Its development opens possibilities for diagnostic planning, particularly in specialized centers, hospitals and universities.
Important: dental MRI does not replace conventional radiography or CBCT. Its use depends on clinical indications, equipment availability and individual diagnostic requirements.
Availability: implementation varies by market and applicable regulatory authorizations.
System: MAGNETOM Free.Max Dental Edition.
