EVIDENCE | 1-MINUTE READ

What did the researchers investigate and find?
A systematic review and meta-analysis assessed whether periodontal therapy reduces blood pressure and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in patients with periodontitis.
The review included 12 randomized controlled trials.
The meta-analysis found the following mean reductions:
- Systolic blood pressure: −4.64 mmHg.
- Diastolic blood pressure: −1.84 mmHg.
- C-reactive protein: −0.58 mg/L.
All three reductions were statistically significant.
What does this mean for your clinical practice?
Periodontal treatment showed potential benefits for blood pressure and systemic inflammation.
However, the certainty of evidence was moderate to low. Additional high-quality clinical trials specifically powered to assess blood pressure outcomes are needed.
These findings do not establish a reduction in cardiovascular events.
